Wild Turkey
This female wild turkey was brought to Tucson Wildlife Center after being found unable to walk, with multiple lacerations along her back. Based on her injuries, she was likely involved in a fight with another turkey, which may have caused temporary spinal trauma.
The good news? She began walking again shortly after her arrival, and her lacerations were superficial, requiring only bandaging and a course of antibiotics. She has been steadily improving and, once her wounds are fully healed, she will have access to both an indoor enclosure and an outdoor space so she can continue to rebuild strength as she prepares for release.
Because she is receiving antibiotics, she must remain in our care for 45 days after her medication ends. This is a standard veterinary guideline that ensures all medications are fully out of her system before she returns to the wild—something wildlife rehabilitators are required to follow, just as veterinarians do with livestock animals.
