Coyote Release
This coyote was recently rescued and brought to Tucson Wildlife Center after being found limping in traffic. X-rays revealed three healing fractures, that required no further treatment,
and a serious dental issue. One of his mandibular canine teeth was broken, with an exposed root and active infection.
The mandibular canine is one of the most difficult teeth to extract. In carnivores, the root extends deep into the lower jaw, which is relatively thin in this area. Any excess pressure can fracture the mandible—a life-threatening injury for a wild animal.
Our medical team spent over two hours carefully chipping and filing away small pieces of bone from the jaw—carefully loosening the periodontal ligament—to remove the tooth. This procedure required exceptional patience, precision, and experience.
Following treatment and recovery, the coyote was released back into the wild. TWC is incredibly proud of our wildlife care team and the level of care provided to every patient, even when procedures are technically challenging and time intensive.
