Patient of the Week: 11/17/23

Newborn Javelinas

These orphaned javelinas (from different locations) were less than a week old when they arrived at Tucson Wildlife Center. Sometimes called “reds” because of the color of their hair at this age, newborn javelinas can run within a few hours of birth. Weighing around one pound, these cute peccaries will continue to grow until they reach their adult weight of 35 to 60 pounds.

Unfortunately, TWC was given no information on the location of their herds and could not draw them in, so our wildlife care team could not reunite these babies with their mothers. To give them the best chance to grow strong and hopefully live a wild life, they will be raised in captivity with others until they are ready for release as a herd.
