PATIENT OF THE WEEK
Coyote Release
This resilient coyote came to Tucson Wildlife Center after being hit by a car, suffering head trauma that left him disoriented and walking in circles. At first, he retained a head tilt and was unable to walk in a straight line—concerning signs of neurological damage. Thanks to intensive treatment and supportive care from our wildlife medical team, he eventually regained his balance and could walk confidently across his enclosure.
In addition to his neurological recovery, he was treated for mange with a topical anti-parasitic medication. Our veterinarian also administered preventive vaccines for rabies and distemper—essential for carnivorous mammals like coyotes, who are more likely to spread these viruses through bites, fights, or shared food sources.
We are happy to report that by the time of his release, the coyote had fully recovered, with no remaining head tilt. In the release video, he is seen trotting off into the desert with ease, pausing just once to glance back at the team that helped him heal.
