PATIENT OF THE WEEK
Lucky Ducklings/Pool Safety
These seven Mallard ducklings were recently found paddling in a swimming pool—alone, with no sign of their mother. Thankfully, they were brought to Tucson Wildlife Center, where they will stay until they are ready to be released back into the wild together.
Swimming pools may seem harmless, but for wildlife, they can become dangerous traps. Every year, we see animals like ducklings, lizards, squirrels, and other small mammals fall into the water and struggle to escape. During monsoon season, Sonoran Desert Toads also emerge in large numbers and often end up trapped in pools, where they risk drowning.
You can help protect local wildlife with three simple actions: 1) Add a pool ramp or floating platform to give animals an easy exit. There are many different, easy-to-install, styles available online. 2) Check your pool daily, especially in the morning. 3) Be alert for increased wildlife activity during the spring, summer, and monsoon season.
A small effort can save lives. Let’s work together to protect the wild animals that share our desert home.
