Mallard Duckling Release
Earlier this summer, a family of Mallard ducks landed in a backyard swimming pool. By the next morning, the mother and most of her ducklings had moved on—but one tiny duckling was left behind. When the finders couldn’t locate her family, they brought the little one to Tucson Wildlife Center for care.
Just two months ago she was a fluffy, downy duckling in need of comfort and guidance. To help her feel secure, our team provided a feather duster and a stuffed animal in her enclosure to simulate the warmth and presence of a mother duck. With attentive care, she grew quickly and developed the skills she needed for life in the wild.
Last week, a member of TWC’s wildlife rehabilitation team released her in a safe, resource-rich location. When they returned the next day to check, she was spotted swimming happily—preening, diving, and paddling around—looking right at home.
Her story is a reminder that while nature usually knows best, sometimes wild families get separated. If you find a young animal alone, please call our admissions team for advice before intervening. Often a parent is nearby, but when a baby truly needs help—like this little duckling—we are here to give them a second chance.
