For many people, being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Arizona Army National Guard would be enough service work. But for John, it was just a start. His first introduction to Tucson Wildlife Center was after finding an orphaned baby quail in his garden. “I brought the quail to TWC and was so thankful for the care they extended that I decided to give back a little of my time as gratitude. That was over a year ago and I have volunteered ever since. Recently, a paid position came available, and I am pleased to continue working at TWC as an animal intake specialist.”
John’s commitment to our natural environment also extends to gardening and creating sustainable permaculture. His backyard is so lush that his neighbors commonly refer to it as “the rainforest.” John has planted 30 different species of fruit trees, including Mango, Pomegranate, Passionfruit, and Jaboticaba (or Brazilian grape tree), a unique tree with fruit growing on its trunk. “Gardening and creating sustainable permaculture are my ways of leaving a place better than when I found it.”
