Newborn Mice
Four newborn mice were recently brought to Tucson Wildlife Center after being found orphaned. Arizona is home to many different mouse species, and they all develop quickly in their first weeks of life. These little ones—estimated at just about a week old—still have their eyes closed but they already have a soft coat of fur, an early milestone in a mouse’s rapid growth.
Thankfully, all four siblings arrived with no injuries and only mild dehydration. Our wildlife care team started them on a specialized formula that mimics their mother’s milk. As they grow, they will move from being nipple-fed to lapping formula from a dish on their own. Soon after, we will gradually introduce soft solids to help them develop natural feeding behaviors before release.
During their first two weeks of life, they rely entirely on milk for nutrition while their fur fills in and their bodies strengthen. Around two weeks old, their eyes begin to open and they become more mobile, often starting to nibble solid foods. By three to four weeks, they are typically weaned, fully furred, and ready to explore the world with the skills they need to survive.
Mice are fascinating little mammals. Even at a young age, they are agile climbers and use their sensitive whiskers to navigate tight spaces and sense their surroundings. Their sense of smell is well-developed from birth, long before their eyes open, and guides much of their early behavior. Although small, they play an important ecological role as seed dispersers and as part of the natural food web for many native predators.
