Patient of the Week – Fall Migration Tracker
At Tucson Wildlife Center, we use a variety of tools and resources to provide the best possible care for the sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals that are admitted to our Center. One of these tools is Cornell Ornithology Lab’s bird migration dashboard, BirdCast, which offers real-time insights into migratory patterns. Last night, 255,100 birds crossed Pima County. A week ago, on October 3rd, 1,146,700 birds crossed Pima County! Check out this easy-to-use tool at https://dashboard.birdcast.info/region/US-AZ-019.
With this tracker, TWC can monitor the movement of species passing through our area, gaining insights into when certain species are likely to arrive. This allows the Center to prepare for the potential influx of migratory birds needing care. For rehabilitated migratory birds, understanding the natural migration schedule for a particular species allows us to time releases that align with their movement patterns—giving them a better chance of survival in the wild.
