Patient of the Week: 08/29/25

Greater Roadrunner

This Greater Roadrunner was brought to Tucson Wildlife Center after being struck by a car. She arrived with extensive feather damage and a dislocated shoulder—a serious injury for a bird built for speed.

Unlike many birds that spend most of their time in flight, roadrunners rely heavily on both their wings and powerful legs. Their wings provide essential balance and maneuverability when sprinting, leaping after prey, or gliding short distances. A dislocated shoulder can prevent a bird from spreading its wings properly, making it difficult to escape predators, hunt effectively, or survive in the wild. For roadrunners in particular, this type of injury can mean the difference between life and death.

With careful medical treatment, time, and supportive care from our staff and volunteers, she has made a truly remarkable recovery. Her shoulder is now strong and functional, her feathers are regrowing, and she’s once again showing the agility and spirit that make roadrunners such extraordinary desert survivors.

Every animal that comes through our doors has a story of resilience, and this roadrunner’s recovery reminds us just how vital wildlife rescue and rehabilitation are in giving injured animals a second chance at life.
