Patient updates
Two of Tucson Wildlife Center’s recent patients are making incredible strides in their journey back to the wild—a majestic turkey vulture and a spirited roadrunner. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at their inspiring progress.
Last week this turkey vulture arrived at TWC suffering from dehydration/emaciation. To protect the bird’s feathers from damage while perching, a tail wrap was carefully applied. This week, our wildlife care team removed the wrap and relocated the vulture to our large Eagle Flight aviary to reacclimate to Tucson’s heat and rebuild muscle strength in his wings (see video). In preparation for release, our patient’s care team will observe his flight performance over the next several days to ensure he is highly capable of surviving in the wild.
Three weeks ago, this roadrunner was covered in an unknown sticky substance, causing him to lose most of his feathers. To protect his skin from injury or infections, our wildlife care team fashioned a sweater out of a sock for him to wear. We are happy to report that our patient’s feathers have regrown to the point where the sweater is no longer needed. While this little guy’s progress is remarkable, he still has a ways to go before his feathers are fully regrown and he’s ready to return to the wild.
Our team will continue to closely monitor both patients, making sure they have completely recovered. Stay tuned for exciting news of their releases! If you would like to help patients like this turkey vulture and roadrunner, click this link to donate
