Javelina
This adult male javelina was rescued and brought to Tucson Wildlife Center after he was found with severe lacerations along the right side of his face. These injuries were most consistent with a fight between males during a breeding season dispute.
In Arizona, javelinas can breed year-round, and when females are ready to breed, males often engage in fierce battles, using their sharp tusks to assert dominance and secure breeding rights. These fights can lead to deep, serious wounds like the ones this javelina suffered.
Upon arrival at TWC, our veterinary team immediately anesthetized him and began the long process of repairing the damage. It took nearly three hours for our veterinarian to carefully clean and suture his extensive facial wounds. Thanks to intensive medical care, daily treatments, and lots of patience on his part, this javelina has been recovering and healing safely at the Center.
Once his wounds have healed completely, he will be ready to return to the wild in the area he was found. We are grateful to everyone who helped give this javelina a second chance.
