Sora (migratory waterbird) Release
This small, but mighty, Sora was brought to Tucson Wildlife Center after being found on the ground, unable to fly. An examination by our wildlife care team revealed a droop in her right wing. Luckily, there were no fractures or other injuries. After spending time at the Center in rehabilitation to regain strength and mobility, we are happy to report that she has been released back into the wild.
Sora’s are small, secretive marsh birds that breed in northern parts of the United States and Canada, then migrate south to spend winters in the southern U.S., Mexico, and Central America. Though they are small (about the size of a robin), Soras are surprisingly strong fliers that travel thousands of miles between their breeding and wintering grounds. During migration, Soras pass through Arizona, frequenting wetlands, marshes, and riparian areas. Some may overwinter in southern Arizona’s riparian-zones.
Known for their elusive behavior, Soras are often heard more than seen as they hide in dense marsh vegetation. Their long toes help them walk easily on floating plants, giving them great balance and the ability to move quietly through the marshes. Their mottled brown, black, and gray plumage provides excellent camouflage in wetland environments, helping them avoid predators. While they prefer walking on vegetation, Soras are strong swimmers and will sometimes dive underwater to escape danger. If you would like to help patients like this Sora, click this link to donate
