Greater Roadrunner
At Tucson Wildlife Center, our volunteers and staff wear many hats, always using their creativity and resourcefulness to ensure the best care for our wild patients. This Greater Roadrunner was brought to TWC after being found completely covered in an unknown sticky substance that had weighed down his feathers, causing them to clump together and break. Our wildlife care team gently bathed the roadrunner, taking great care to minimize any additional feather loss but, unfortunately, he ended up clean but quite bare, and will continue to naturally shed any additional broken feathers.
To protect the roadrunner’s skin from injury or infections and to help prevent dryness, irritation, or sun burn while the feathers regrow, his care team fashioned a sweater out of a sock for him to wear. Wearing this sweater also had an immediate calming effect on our patient, mimicking the feeling of having feathers and providing him a sense of security. Stay tuned for future updates on this roadrunner’s feather regrowth, rehabilitation, and eventual release back into the wild.
