Rock Squirrel
This resilient rock squirrel is cautiously peeking out, assessing if the weather is warm enough to be released. Found in a chicken coop with severe soft tissue wounds on his back, he was brought to Tucson Wildlife Center for treatment. With careful attention and gentle care, TWC’s wildlife care team has been able to provide this patient with the medical care he needed to heal properly, and he will soon be released back into the wild.
To minimize stress and discomfort for this squirrel during medical procedures, TWC veterinarians used mild sedation to calm him while they carefully cleaned and treated his wounds. As our priority is always the well-being of the animals entrusted to us, this patient was carefully monitored while under sedation.
Fun facts: Rock squirrels, as their name suggests, are adept climbers that are commonly found in rocky areas, canyons, and desert habitats around Tucson. While primarily herbivorous, rock squirrels are opportunistic feeders and will eat a variety of foods, including seeds, fruits, insects, bird eggs and small vertebrates.
