Patient of the Week: 4/17/2026

Cactus Wren

The Cactus Wren (Arizona’s state bird) may be known for its bold personality, but this little one had a difficult start. Before being brought to Tucson Wildlife Center for care, he was found as a nestling in the bed of a pickup truck, where his siblings were discovered deceased.

For our wildlife care team, the first challenge was simply helping him feel safe enough to eat. Nestlings typically gape (open their mouth wide) instinctively, but he was hesitant. With patience and consistency, our team spent hours encouraging him to feed.

As he settled in, several techniques were used to support his development. Playing recorded adult calls (while carefully avoiding alarm calls), using mirrors for companionship, and even showing videos of adult birds feeing their young all helped stimulate his natural feeding behaviors.

Once he grew stronger, his care shifted to building the skills he would need in the wild. His enclosure was updated with leaf litter for foraging, small sticks to encourage early nesting behavior, and plenty of natural cover. We began offering a wild variety of small insects—placing them on the ground to encourage him to recognize, pursue, and capture his own food.

He has now advanced to larger, more challenging prey like grasshoppers and hornworms, helping him practice the hunting and prey-handling skills he will rely on for survival. In the video, you can see him slinging a hornworm around—a behavior that helps subdue larger prey, making it easier to consume.

Every step of his care is about more than recovery—it is about preparing him for life back in the desert, where he belongs. He has recently been moved to a large outdoor aviary, where he can acclimate to the weather and other natural conditions. Stay tuned for updates on his release.
