Patient of the Week

Spiny Lizard

This hardy little spiny lizard was admitted to Tucson Wildlife Center after being found dragging both hind legs, with no visible external injuries. With quiet housing, supportive care, and time to rest, he has made great progress and is now using one hind leg normally and the other partially and has been released back into the wild.

Reptiles are incredibly resilient. Even when they lose strength or function in a limb, many can still climb, forage, and escape danger using their remaining three legs. Their low energy needs and adaptable movement give them a survival advantage.

A kind finder cared enough to try to help and kept the lizard safe, but it is important to remember that injured native wildlife should be brought to a licensed rehabilitator as soon as possible. It gives the animal the best chance at proper care and is required under state law. When in doubt, give us a call. We are always happy to guide you with next steps.
