‘They look into your soul’: K-12 teachers and researchers study small owls in southern Arizona

Teachers from across the country spend a week with Hawkwatch International surveying the Chiricahua Mountains for owls to bring conservation back to their classrooms.

After spending a week in the Chiricahua Mountains surveying the forest for owls, it’s impossible to look at trees the same way again.

At least, that’s what Dave Oleyar says. He’s the director of long-term monitoring and community science at Hawkwatch International, a nonprofit organization that has focused on raptor conservation for 40 years.

In other words, he’s a professional owl enthusiast.
